What is the first session like for individual therapy?

The first session is the time for you to start to share your story, talk about your goals and what you would like to change. Just like a doctor wouldn’t prescribe you medication without taking your blood pressure and listening to your heartbeat, we need to understand you before making any recommendations. Then we’ll talk about what it might look like to get you to your destination, and answer any questions you have. Usually it’s from the second session onward that we’re digging in with skills and strategies to get you moving.

Do I really need therapy?

Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully navigated many difficulties you’ve faced, there’s nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it. Having enough self-awareness to realize when you need a helping hand, is to be admired. By taking responsibility and accepting where you’re at in life, you’re making a commitment to change the situation by seeking therapy. Therapy provides long-lasting benefits and support, giving you the tools, you need to avoid triggers, re-direct damaging patterns, and overcome the challenges you face.

Do you do phone or virtual therapy?

We use the HIPAA-compliant program through our client portal for e-therapy. It’s very easy: you’ll get a reminder link from the scheduling portal to click on, and that will start your session. Established clients can also hold some sessions by telephone, if needed.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are conducting all sessions via video therapy until further notice.

What theoretical approach do you use?

I pull from a variety of theories and techniques. I find Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Positive Psychology, Motivational Interviewing, Client-Centered Therapy, and Mindfulness techniques are often helpful for my clients.

How often will we meet?

To begin, we will meet once a week. It’s important to gain some momentum in the beginning by meeting weekly or progress can stall out. Once some or all of your goals are met, meeting less often will make sense.
